Apartment dwellers, go for the ball!
With its convenient, collapsible handle for closet storage, the Dyson DC24 Ball Upright is the lightest and most compact vacuum in Dyson's line-up. This vacuum model is based upon the successful ?Ball? design which allows the head and base off the vacuum to pivot and turn with a twist of the wrist. The design allows the vacuum to easily maneuver around furniture and tight spaces with ease. As such, it is excellent for cleaning all floors with the grace and aplomb of a ballet dancer. It has a lifetime HEPA filter. There are no bags to replace. An extending wand cleans drapes, upholstery, and more.
When and where storage space is prime and closets are already crammed, this 12-pound Dyson offers a collapsible handle. It's an upright that fits into really small spaces.

so cool, I'm scared to break it!! incredible power & manueverability, but you know that for Dyson. You will be stunned how dirty your floors were when you empty the dirt cup!! Drawbacks: short cord, sensitive brush bar, strange on-board tool setup, fairly small dirt collecting cup... Either way, I am happy to have my Dyson...

dyson DC24 ball review
»
I received the product promptly, put it together and I think it is fabulous so far! I couldn't believe how much dirt it pulled out of my carpets. Obviously my last vacuum cleaner didn't do the job.

Nice lightweight vacuum cleaner
»
I bought this vacuum cleaner to replace a small "Shark" that my girlfriend was using to clean her hardwood floors. It was of course way more expensive even buying it at BBB with coupon, but it's worth it. She is now using it for the whole house. She has a hover wind tunnel which does suck up stuff very well but is difficult to horse around the furniture.
At the store, I took down a DC17, DC24 & DC25 and proceeded to vacuum the aisles and that tough rubber carpet they give you to practice on. The DC17 seems to have the best grip on suction as it wanted to pick up the rug and move it. Both the DC24 & DC25 skated right over, but still picked up the dirt. (I dumped the contents of the cleaner onto the rug when the clerk was busy with someone else) I think the head of both of these cleaners have some sort of bit that keeps it up just a bit off the floor. I was going to get the DC25 for myself but the clerk came by and said they would be carrying the DC25 ball Animal version in the early 2009, and it would save me over a hundred bucks in attachments vs buying them alone. So I put it back and went home to think about it some more.
Then I got a flier from a local vacuum repair shop that was closing one of it's two stores. So I dropped in and talked to a repair guy. He said the DC17's have two belts in them and they cost about a hundred bucks to replace plus another fifty for labor. That the new DC24 & DC25 have fixed this problem and that they used to get about 2K a month in repair work and now won't hence why they were closing one of the stores. So a plus for Dyson and why to pick a DC24 or DC25 over the now heavily discounted DC17's. These new models have a head unit that is self contained with it's own motor. I haven't looked closely at it but it would appear that if there is a belt replacement issue in the future it would be easy to get at. Oh yeah, I'm currently running a vintage Electrolux, circa early 60's, that I got as a hand-me-down, and the repair guy said those things run forever. So I'll be buying a replacement hose for that machine, which is what is currently driving my vacuum cleaner search.
Since I still needed a replacement for the shark, I bought the DC24 at BBB. Figuring that if it didn't work out, I wouldn't also get a DC25 Animal for myself.
As a test, my girlfriend is very meticulous cleaner so I ran this vacuum cleaner on her carpets like the day after she had cleaned, and there was almost nothing picked up. So all those claims about how Dyson cleans better than the rest, well I'm a skeptic if you use those other vacuum cleaners and keep at it, and regularly vacuum.
First time use after a week of 1 dog & 2 cats the report from my girlfriend is that it's wonderful. After using this cleaner on the hardwood, she moved right over to the carpets it appeared to get all of the cat and dog hair. Her wrists bother her, I think it's early arthritis, and the ball motion with the light weight cleaner was very easy to use. You can turn off the spinning brush for the hardwood floor, a button right next to the "on" button.
She doesn't use the hose attachments much so the short hose is not much of a drawback.
====================
Pros:
Light weight
Compact storage as the handle collapses down inside the hose.
Easy to empty canister
Works on all floors
Very maneuverable.
Cons:
Cord is way too short. It's nearly always used with a 20ft extension cord.
Not very easy to use on stairs, That ball moves the whole unit around and it doesn't come with a stair beater attachment.
Canister is small. Get used to emptying it frequently.
========
It's too early to tell whether this cleaner will have the reliability of the old Electrolux but the vacuum cleaner repair guy did like them so I'm hopeful. I'll update this review if anything crops up.
Recommendation: Not for a big house unless you like to use extension cords, and empty the canister often. Yes as a second vacuum cleaner, yes for an apartment. Avoid the older models and the belt repair issue.

No Pain, Big Gain

You might be used to the idea that the harder you work at vacuuming, the better job you're doing. E.g., if you use a big heavy vacuum with a huge honkin' motor, and you set the height adjustment to the minimum, then you'll get your rugs and floors really clean ("Get a clean floor while you build your pecs and delts!") The Dyson DC24 will disabuse you of this notion. Using it doesn't feel like work at all - just sort of like waving a little stick over the floor - and in a few minutes you have extracted a truly scary amount of crud from your rugs.
The power cord is a little short, but extension cords are cheap. The Jedi moves used to convert to wand cleaning aren't as difficult as some reviews might suggest. The crud-emptying process is a surgically-clean joy compared with the bagged cleaner wrestle-and-choke procedure.
May I have a word with the fathers in the audience? Thank you. In the past, I had to do all the vacuuming because it was, for real, too much work for the more delicate and the younger members of the tribe. The Dyson DC24 has enabled a much more equitable work-share arrangement. I recommend it highly.
