Not perfect, but well worth the price.

The battery pack was the biggest problem I had with it. The batteries just didn't fit & I was afraid I'd brake it by forcing them. When I contacted the vendor he said it's a tight fit but it won't break, and he was right.
Aside from that, the shaking was a something to get used to when writing letters, but practice helps. I found engraving shapes and designs much easier.
I don't claim professional quality, but I've used it to put my kids names on electronics, and to engrave personalized sayings and designs on glass gifts. Overall, I'm happy with it.

Just the thing

Agree with the other reviewer.. this thing just flat out works. There's very little noise or vibration, making this thing very handy. It's comfortable to hold and feather light. As for long term durability, I'm a bit more skeptical... but for the performance, I'll happily replace it if I run into any problems.
The construction is very simple and cheap. But it works very nicely.

Best of a bad breed: flawed but saveable
»
We use diamond-tip rotary engravers in a research lab where I work. We use it engrave ID numbers on glass microscope slides, hundreds at a time. In the past we have tried Dremel's AC powered engraver, which is heavy and loud as a chainsaw. We've also used an orange-bodied Chinese engraver which had poor bearings, a glued-shut body, and ate batteries like breakfast cereal.
The Hawk's good news is that it is quiet and lightweight, and its shell is closed with philips-head screws. The bad news is that the internal wiring is very poorly made: our first unit failed within a day. The red "slide switch" is just a sliding contact that touches the motor casing, and the flexing of the thin wire soldered to that contact caused the wire to break.
BUT! I opened the shell, wired in a proper toggle switch, (C&K SPST 7101) replaced the battery pack with a 5v DC wall power supply, and oiled the front bearing. Now it's a peach, smooth running, quiet, and battery-free, and probably long lasting. Down the road, it appears that the engraving tip can be replaced with a dremel diamond burr.
So, how can such a flawed product rate four stars? Because it's the best we've found for OUR demanding use among many lesser units, and because its flaws can easily be remedied.
