This hygrometer is stainless steel, uses a 4.25 inch diameter dial face and is great for monitoring greenhouses, sunrooms or problem areas. Included is an outdoor swivel arm bracket for mounting at just the right angle, as well as an indoor mounting pin. The stainless steel will retain its luster with age. Hygrometers measure the moisture content of the air to determine the relative humidity. Our mechanical hygrometers take advantage of a time-tested method in which a synthetic fiber expands as it absorbs moisture from the air. This expansion, in turn, moves the metal coil to which it is bonded. As the coil twists, the pointer moves up the scale. As the fiber dries, the coil contracts and the pointer reverses direction. Relative humidity ranging from 45 to 70 percent is generally considered to be comfortable. Use in combination with a humidifier or de-humidifier to maximize your comfort.

Nice looking, but does it work?

I got this after a recent humidifier purchaser and after reading what another reviewer said about the importance of a hygrometer, so I bought it. It is very nice (though the face is much bigger than I had expected) but I have no idea if the thing is accurate or not. It has consistently read between 45 - 55% humidity in my house which to me, seems high. These readings have been both when the humidifier has been on and off as well as in two different areas of the house. The instructions that came with this item indicate that it has been "set" in the factory, but if the unit needs an adjustment, the instructions say to use another hygrometer to know what to set it to. So I would have to buy a second one to see if the first one is accurate! I really have no idea if mine is accurate or not. It does seem to read high, especially since it is early, but already cold in the northeast, a time that the inside air usually feels dry. So, I can't really review the accuracy of this thing. As I said it "looks" nice, but I can't vouch for how well it works!

A Good Product

I searched extensively for an outdoor hygrometer (humidity gage) and finally found this reasonably priced instrument. It arrived well-packaged and met all my expectations. The large, round white dial with black markings and pointer is very readable, even at a moderate distance. The finish is excellent. There is a calibration adjustment, but the instrument arrived in calibration. The mounting bracket is designed for a flat, flush surface and might need an additional custom bracket for mounting on an irregular surface. This appears to be an excellent product for the price.
