For sailors, surfers, hang-gliders, or kite-fliers, this nifty gadget is a must-have for keeping tabs on current wind conditions. The tiny handheld anemometer comes in a sporty, yellow, plastic, weather-resistant casing, making it ideal for use during water activities or rainy weather. About 5 seconds after powering up, the anemometer reports the current wind speed in either miles per hour, kilometers per hour, meters per second, or Knots plus, displays wind speed on a Beaufort Scale bar graph. The module also records the maximum and average wind speeds for any 2- to 10-second period of time, and recalls them at the user’s prompting. This anemometer also measures current temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius and wind chill. The LCD screen has a backlight, making the display easy to read even in low-light conditions. The display automatically turns off every 8 seconds in order to preserve the life of the 3-volt lithium cell battery. This anemometer comes with a handy neck band to help prevent you from losing it in foul weather, and is covered by a one-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde

Grandson delighted

I gave this anemometer to my 15 year old grandson for Christmas and he was absolutely delighted with it. He went right outside in the cold Minnesota winter to test it. Wind velocity is important to one who flies R-C planes.

A little slow with the wind-chill feature, but works great!

I was outside today, measuring the wind here in Kansas. It took 15 minutes for the temperature reading to settle (compared to 30 minutes on another review i read), but when it did settle, I measured a -13 degree wind chill! And the first gust I measured was a 21-mph gust. It is a great product for the price, and I'll be waiting for those windy days here in KS!

This little device is fun!

I have to confess: an anemometer had been as object of desire for some time. Initially I got a fancy weather station that included one, but that didn't work so well because installation of the gauge was a huge hassle (find a good spot by reading the extensive manual and looking around, climb up on the roof, get it solidly nailed, etc.). And then the weather station itself died a definitive death and that was it. A pity, because I love to monitor and study the weather where I live -- huge storms and high winds, everything turning around in a matter of minutes.
A handheld anemometer, now that seemed like a great idea! I went for it. Happily I was one of those customers whose unit did not come with a dead battery, and I had it up and running in a few minutes -- helped by the clear, instructive manual which also explains the Beaufort Scale. Configuring it was easy, and I like it that you can choose units (I'm metric).
There is no way I can tell how accurate the wind meter's measurements are, but it is such fun to use it! It will give me current wind speed, maximum and average wind speeds, temperature and windchill. It is weather-resistant and there's a backlight so you can see the readings in low light conditions. It comes with a lanyard but no protective case to store it in, so I got a Case Logic Small Universal Pocket (Caselogic UNZ-2 Small Universal Pocket w/Screen Protection(Black/Silver)) and the fit is perfect. Now I'm set to monitor the crazy climate I live in.

problem product
»
When I first received this Anemometer the battery was dead. I replaced the battery with new one and it worked fine. Turned it off and put it away. A few days latter I took it out to use it again and the battery was dead again. I found out there is a drain on the battery when the unit is off. So now I pull the battery out when I put it away. When I put the battery back in to use it, the unit will not power up with out fooling around with it for several minutes. It's too much work so now it's back in the box and in a drawer. This works fine when working but, I would find a different unit that is more reliable.

I have really enjoyed this! Very easy to use and not hard to change settings. I especially like how you can track average, current or max wind speed. Back light button is a real plus.
